Gifts and greeting cards did not start Father's Day. A daughter's love and a strong cause started it.
A town in Fairmont, West Virginia, staged a memorial in 1908 for 361 men killed in a coal mine explosion. Many were fathers. This occasion turned into one of the first times individuals joined together to celebrate fathers.
Two years later, Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, decided to do something extra. Her mother passed away, so her father reared her; she believed fathers like hers merited a unique day as well. Her work helped Spokane to have the first official Father's Day in 1910.
The rest of the nation, however, took some time to catch up. Different presidents backed the concept over the years, but it wasn't made formal until 1972 under President Nixon's signature.
Every third Sunday in June we now set aside time to honor fathers all around since one person's devotion transformed a basic concept into a nationwide custom.

Wish to accomplish more than simply give a card? Concentrate on quality time and deliberate acts of kindness this year. Here are easy yet significant ways to honor Dad in a manner he will truly appreciate:
1. Plan a Day That’s All About Him
Think about what your dad really enjoys. Is he into food, games, the outdoors—or just a quiet, no-stress day?
- Make His Favorite Meal: Whether it's Roasted Broccoli Pesto Pasta, Turkey and Scallion Dumplings, Victoria Sponge Cake,or Blueberry Sweet Corn Layer Cake, prepare it yourself and serve it fresh. What even better? Host a BBQ in the backyard so he can sit back and relax while you do the grilling or surprise him with breakfast in bed.
- If he enjoys gaming, dust out the Nintendo Switch or turn on a console for a few rounds of Mario Kart or golf. Let him win—or at least pretend to.
- Plan a brief trip, take a walk, or just relax in the garden or patio with some nibbles and a nice drink. Sometimes simply being together in the sun is sufficient.
2. Make the Gift Personal
Skip the generic “Best Dad” mug. Instead, give him something that shows you really thought it through:
- Create a tiny album (digital or printed) with images and captions of your finest experiences shared.
- Make a brief film in which every family member discusses what most inspires them about him.
- Monthly Subscription Box Select something that fits his hobbies—coffee, craft beer, BBQ sauces, fishing equipment, or perhaps DIY tools.
